Local jeweller or national chain? Both, honestly.
We are an independent shop, so you would expect us to argue for independents. Instead here is the fair version, including the things the big chains genuinely do better. For some purchases they are the right answer, and pretending otherwise would not help you.
What each one is actually better at
Where a national chain wins
Standardised buyback. Published terms, honoured at any branch. If you move cities, that portability is real.
Scale of stock. Hundreds of designs on the floor, ready to take away today.
Certified diamonds. Grading certificates and structured warranties as standard.
Brand-name reassurance. For a first-time buyer with nobody to ask, that counts.
Where an independent wins
Custom work. Bring a photograph or a family piece and have it made at the weight you want. Chains rarely do this properly.
Regional pieces. Thushi, saaj, nath, kolhapuri work — stocked thinly by chains because they are local, not national.
Making charges. Usually lower, because there is no national marketing budget inside the price.
Somebody who knows you. Not a small thing when you are back in ten years to exchange a piece.
Which suits what you are buying

- Either — but insist on the grading certificate whoever you buy from.
- Plain 22K chain
- Compare making charges. This is where the difference shows most.
- Traditional Maharashtrian
- An independent, almost always. It is regional work and it is made by regional karigars.
- Custom or copied design
- An independent. Bring the photograph.
- Bridal set
- See both. Compare the same weight, and check the exchange terms as carefully as the design.
Whichever way you go, judge it on the answers to the seven questions rather than on the signage.
