Seven questions. Ask them everywhere, including here.
Every jeweller in Ambernath will tell you their gold is pure and their prices are fair. That is not information — it is what everyone says. These seven questions have checkable answers, which makes them worth more than any promise. Take them to every shop you visit. We would rather you bought from a shop that answers them well than from us on trust alone.
- 1
- “Can I see the HUID on this piece?”
Every hallmarked item has a six-character code unique to it, not to the shop. Ask for a loupe and check it on the BIS Care app while you stand there. A shop that discourages this has told you something.
How to check a HUID → - 2
- “What is the net weight, and what is being deducted from it?”
Gross weight and net weight are different numbers. Stones, meena and colour are sometimes cut out of the net weight. Ask which is being used to price your piece. - 3
- “Is the making charge a percentage or per gram?”
Both are normal. Which one you are being quoted changes the total significantly on a heavy piece.

- “Can I have that in writing before I decide?”
Metal rate, weight, making charges and GST, itemised, before anything is packed. If a shop will not put it on paper in advance, that is your answer. - 5
- “Do you deduct melting loss when I exchange?”
Many do. It is one of the largest hidden costs in buying gold, and it only shows up years later when you come back to exchange. - 6
- “Will you test gold I did not buy here?”
And is that test free? A shop confident in its own scales is usually happy to test anyone's gold. - 7
- “If I bring a photograph, can you make it?”
The answer tells you whether you are in a shop with karigars behind it or a shop that only sells what arrives in a box.
